Monarchy: Natural decay

I would say that the point which resonates the most with me is the point that the monarchy is not the uniting force it's claimed to be. Especially with the (to my mind fairly irrational) distrust the country has of Prince Charles becoming King, they don't seem to inspire the kind of awe one would imagine they would. Actually one argument against that I remember was from Christopher Hitchens, and it went something along the lines of "The monarchy combines two of the worst aspects of society: feudalism and celebrity culture".

Still, while in principle I'm for a republic, I don't know that it's at the top of my list of priorities, and I don't see any way the monarchy's going to go any time soon except by natural decay.
