The Klaxons, The Sunshine Underground, ShitDisco - they're all part of a process of mechanical reclamation. The bones and gristle and sinew of ten bland years are rendered and whisked to produce something empty, flavourless and ignorant. A fluorescent void, unable to provoke thought or reaction.

Doesn’t it depress you that bands such as the Pigeon Detectives and the Fratellis could just as easily be on the front cover of FHM as the NME? Admit it, you’re angry and pissed off. I know I am: Alternative culture has been hijacked by bands who say nothing and stand for nothing – but get away with it because no one seems to care anymore. Imperial College Union on Cults

I would like to draw attention to an imperial college union web page that explains about cults. I am not writing this article in an attempt to attack mainstream religion, but I want to highlight that the distinction between a supernatural religion and a cult is not conveyed by the Union. I find the section entitled "What should I look out for?" particularly outrageous when I think about the first Alpha Course meeting I went to this week.

Bloc Party (a wake up call)

I remember when I first heard them. Banquet had just been released and I was forever hanging around New Cross. It was such an exciting time. The Libertines were breaking through. Arcadia seemed real. Intelligence and counterculture were in. Posing and the belief that if a song was " guitar based " it was "alternative " were out.
